Trinity College Melbourne- Ng Ping Chien's Narration of His Day at the College

This is Ping Chien's narration of his day at Trinity College Melbourne. You can read more about his profile and student days at Trinity College and snipets of foundation programme at his blog

20 February 2009 (Friday)

The day started off with our TCOLE workshop.
Basically how to use the Trinity Portal and Squirrel Mail.

Met with Heng Cheng at the Union House for lunch. Ended up with this $2.30 garlic naan which was just a thick slab of REALLY oily dough -.- Oh yeah. Dahl curry costs $3.80 for a small container whereas curry with meat costs $5/6. Ate it just like that =.=

Then it was time for out Arts & Drama workshop.

First game was going around with an item of yours, exchanging it with some stranger, and exchange info bout each other as well. So at the end of the game, most people returned the items to the right people, but some ended up in the wrong hands. Overall it was definitely a great ice-breaking activity. Met a number of new people.

Next up: Without any verbal communication,
arrange ourselves from short to tall. Not too bad la right?

After that, we had to arrange ourselves according to our birth dates. All the way from the 1st of January till the 31st of December.
Now this took a little more time.

Many many games. In this one, we walked around the room,
and the conductor called out a number, indicating the number
of body parts we can have in contact with the floor. Hence the
weird positions everyone ended up in. Sometimes we weren’t
even allowed to use our feet as contact points. Therefore..

One contact point WITHOUT using our feet.

8 points - each hand has 2 contact points, 2 elbows, 2 knees.

Then it was the game where everyone stood at the back of
the room, with someone infront. Everyone has to creep up on
him, whenever he turns around we have to stay still. If he catches anyone moving he can send them to the back of the room again. What’s the name of this game?

And before we had a short break, there was a 10-15 minute solo performance by one of the conductors. She did a narrative sketch entitled ‘Secret’. It’s bout this little girl who was always bullied in school cause of her size and how red she gets when she’s nervous. Oh yeah, her secret is that she feels great whenever she dances. Right. The performance is actually for little children. We were to give out feedback at the end of the sketch. Her acting was nice.

So after the break..

We took turns to go up infront of everyone and give a frozen
picture (pose) of our impressions of Australia - what we expected before coming here, what do we think after being here for 2 weeks, and what we expect or hope to get by the end of the year.

This is the ‘before’ - care to guess?

Not during, but ‘after’.

Close to the end di. We MIMED. Like you know, the black and
white clowns kinda mime? Yup. It was very calming (the music
that was played). And yet, hilarious at the same time. My partner did the Macarena and I had to follow his movements. You see,
the idea is to do it real slow so that noone can tell who’s leading
and who’s following. So yeah, the macarena in slow motion -.-

Last but not least.. rather than passing a message
down the line, we passed an action / series of actions.

Initial action: Putting on sunglasses in the morning.

It became this.

Anyways, the workshop was really alot of fun, as described by the other people who did it earlier than us. Definitely got to mix around with fellow students more. More friends, blablabla that kinda thing.
