University of Tasmania - Quality at Affordable Costs

Cost of Living and Tuition Fees

There have been reports from overseas that Australia is becoming too expensive for study. This may be the case in some parts of Australia, but not Tasmania!

Tuition fees

UTAS has kept tuition fees low for the last ten years and the President has indicated that this will continue into the future. For example: Bachelor of Business at UTAS is A$14,700 per year, Bachelor of Science A$16,800. Fees for UTAS English Language Centre remain at A$270 per week and the new International College fees will be A$13,500 per year.

Does this mean that because we charge lower tuition fees, UTAS is not a good university? No, it does not. UTAS is in the top ten in Australia for Teaching and Learning (Carrick Institute report 2009) and for Research (ARC grants 2009). Most universities’ tuition charges are based on demand for places. The Universities in Melbourne and Sydney are in high demand, because most people overseas only know these two cities. They can charge higher tuition fees and still remain popular.

This is not the case in Tasmania, so in order to attract international students it has been UTAS policy to keep tuition fees at an affordable level. Despite not being well-known UTAS now has 3,000 international students. Many of our students have come because of recommendations by their friends. A survey of our international students indicated that 88% would recommend UTAS to friends and family. UTAS continues to be popular despite the economic crisis and Semester One 2010 saw good growth in commencing students.

Living costs

Our International Student Advisers report that a student can live well in Tasmania for A$14,000 per year, or about A$1100 per month. This is not the case in other parts of Australia, where it can cost up to A$24-26,000 per year, or A$2000 per month. Some of the larger cities have pressure on housing from the large number of international students and emigrants that arrive each year. This again is not the case in Tasmania and we have always been successful in finding good quality accommodation for our students at reasonable prices.

Opportunities for work

Tasmania has one of the highest employment rates in Australia, because of its strong economy, and most of our students find part-time employment with good rates of pay. In 2009, 146 international students were sponsored by the Tasmanian Government for permanent residency to fill job vacancies in the state. This number is expected to grow considerably after the changes to Graduate Skilled Migration, in order to meet the states’ need for qualified and skilled people.

UTAS continues to provide one of the best scholarship programs for international students found anywhere. Nearly 20% of our international students receive the Tasmanian International Scholarship and this will continue. A new scholarship scheme for research students will be announced soon, that will provide part and full fee waivers for exceptional candidates for graduate research in science and other fields.

Affordable, quality education

Students that are concerned that they may not be able to afford a quality education in Australia should be introduced to the University of Tasmania. After looking at other destinations they will be surprised to find that UTAS tuition fees, together with Tasmania’s lower cost of living, work opportunities and scholarships, makes for a very attractive package and maybe they can afford to study in “the best state in the best country in the world” (U.S music student comment on Tasmania, 2009) after all!
