Caterham School- 15 Students Receive Offers from University of Oxford and Cambridge!

Eight girls and seven boys have received offers of places from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The subjects show a very wide variety of interests; Medicine/Science, Maths, Classics, Economics, Engineering, Geography, French & Philosophy

Mr Kim Wells, Director of Learning & Teaching at Caterham School, said: ‘I am delighted for all these students. It is becoming increasingly difficult to gain a place at Oxford and Cambridge as for each place there are over five applicants, all of whom are predicted to achieve top grades. All of our 32 students that applied, including those that unfortunately did not secure a place, deserve great credit because they have worked so hard. The UCAS process is still in progress but it is wonderful to see that so many of our students have already received offers from some of the world’s top universities. Our aim is to inspire students so that they can be independent learners throughout their lives and receiving an offer from a leading university is another key stage in an education for life.’

Doctoral and Master's Scholarships

Scholarships for Doctoral and Master's study at the University of Otago can be applied for at any time during the year.

Doctoral Scholarships

Applications for doctoral scholarships should usually occur when applying for admission. Applications for this scholarship are made online through the eVision portal. Once you have applied for admission to your programme you will receive an alert in your student portal inviting you to apply for a scholarship. It is also possible to apply for a scholarship after being admitted. The main doctoral scholarship, open to both international and domestic applicants, is the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship.

Research Master's Scholarships

Research Master’s scholarships support students during the thesis part of a research Master’s degree; pre-thesis papers are not covered by these scholarships.
Applications for research Master's scholarship should usually occur either:
  • when applying for admission (if the degree is by thesis only, or if the thesis will begin straight away), in which case you will receive an alert in your eVision portal after applying for admission to your programme inviting you to apply for a scholarship; or,
  •  just before the thesis component is about to begin (usually at the start of the second year for a master’s degree by papers and thesis), in which case you will receive a notification in your eVision portal after enrolling in your thesis paper.

Coursework Master's Scholarships

The University of Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship is open to both domestic and international applicants, and is for students studying Master’s degrees which don’t include a full thesis component (although they may include a research report or dissertation).
Some degrees also have a thesis or non-thesis option (usually with the decision made after an initial year of study). In such cases the non-thesis option is eligible for coursework Master’s scholarship support. Note that coursework Master’s scholarships are not available to research master’s students completing a papers year prior to beginning their thesis.
Applications for coursework Master's scholarships are made online through the eVision portal. Once you have applied for admission to your programme you will receive an alert in your student portal inviting you to apply for a scholarship.

CHRYSALIS 2015 SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED

Two Malaysian students have received the prestigious Chairman’s Scholarship to attend the 2015 Chrysalis International Young Leaders Conference in June. Sue Yen Chong and Brendan Teo were selected for their leadership qualities and essays on the theme of this year’s conference, Conflict Resolution.
The students will be two of 40 students from Australia and around the world to participate in the conference and develop their leadership skills.
Sue Yen, from Kuala Lumpur, said “After watching the introductory video on the Chrysalis website and reading the testimonials of past participants, I knew I could not miss being part of a wonderful experience like the Chrysalis program.
“When I first stumbled upon the Chrysalis website, the theme of this year’s conference, Leadership as Conflict Resolution, grabbed my attention. It is so relevant to the current happenings around us. I knew I could contribute my experience living in a culturally diverse country, Malaysia.
“I cannot wait to meet and bond with like minded youths of diverse backgrounds who share a common goal with me: striving for global peace to be a reality. Most of all, I am really looking forward to the experience of developing leadership skills, sharing perspectives on global issues and hopefully imprint a positive change in society.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime not to be missed and experiences like these are hard to come by so whenever an opportunity strikes, I never hesitate.”
When Brendan, who lives in Kota Kinabalu, received notification that he’d received the scholarship he said “I was very happy and excited at the same time. I know that Chrysalis received a lot of applications this year. It was truly an honour to receive the Chairman's Scholarship.
“I hope to meet a lot of new friends and also the opportunity to interact with them as well as learning from the speakers to gain a new perspective on a globally debated issue-Conflict Resolution. This will deepen and at the same time broaden my knowledge on my understandings of conflicts.
“I want to be able to set myself apart in today's globally competitive world. I need the proper tools, especially leadership and soft-skills which are not taught in school.
“I hope that many more Malaysians will get to know about this amazing and eye-opening conference in the future and attend this conference.”
PHARMACY VISIT AND BURSARY PRESENTATION
Foundation Year students were treated to a tour of UQ’s Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE). The prospective pharmacy students found out more about UQ’s Pharmacy program and toured the state-of-the-art facility located across the river from St Lucia in the Brisbane suburb of Woolloongabba.
Throughout the hour-long tour, students saw the many labs and lecture halls in the centre, as well the post-graduate facilities, mock-pharmacies and library. Guided by a senior lecturer, the students had a first-hand experience of what it is like to study Pharmacy at UQ.
At the end of the tour, a special presentation ceremony was held for the 2014 Pharmacy Bursary winner, Dao Linh.
The pharmacy visit was part of IES’ ongoing series of campus visits to familiarise students with UQ and provide extra opportunities to find out more about their undergraduate preference.
IES thanks the staff at PACE for taking time out of their busy schedules to host our students.
